Talking About Genetics

The issues

Students are introduced to genetic modification (GM), how it affects our lives, why issues around crops, food, health and the environment have become important today.

The science

This topic covers the following aspects of Biology:
  • students are introduced to the meaning of genetic modification and make comparisons with traditional selective breeding. They discuss the disadvantages and benefits of modern genetic modification.
  • students also explore food production and attitudes to GM crops, their products and the consequences of GM technologies, as well as socio-economic concerns and those revolving around religious and cultural beliefs.

     

    The activities

    In this topic the learning activities include:

     

  • an understanding of GM technology and comparisons with traditional selective breeding, using an illustration as a prompt
  • an exploration of how the advances of GM technology may affect students' lives and the lives of others, using illustrations and quotes as prompts for discussion.

     

    Age range

    In most countries this topic is suitable for students aged between 12 and 16 years.
