Domestic Waste The issuesThis topic deals with waste management in homes and schools. Students discuss the ways in which their local community deals with waste and what individual citizens, the government and other agencies are doing to deal with the environmental problems caused by waste. The scienceThis topic introduces students to the distinctions between strategies for dealing with waste problems: waste reduction, reuse, recycling and energy recovery. Study of the topic covers a range of natural and synthetic materials including metals, ceramics and polymers. The activitiesThe activities in this topic include: a 'waste audit' to find out what types and quantities of waste are produced in the students' homes or their school, an investigation of what happens to waste in the local community and the extent to which it is recycled, a review of reports in local newspapers to see what are the current issues related to waste. Age rangeThis topic can be a focus for cross curricular work linking science to geography, modern languages and ICT for students aged 12 - 14 years.
