Day 3: Exploring the Climate Change topic
On 26-28 October 2006 the British Council Ukraine organised its fifth annual event for science and language teachers-participants of Science Across the World programme. This time it was a three-day training event for secondary school teachers representing 10 Ukrainian towns.
The programme included two presentations (on Climate Change topic and Web Blogging for Online Communication) and hands-on-sessions on blog design. Besides, each participant had an opportunity to tell about their school. In a country with 215 large towns and the total number of secondary schools reaching 21,600 it is another chance to share good practices. |
We even started our project collection of mugs picturing local themes! On the picture one mug presents the town Smila, Cherkassy region, and the second one – ARTEK, the international children camp, Gurzuf, Crimea. |
Other important issues included choosing the areas of the curriculum the schools working on SAW topics would focus on in the coming months and agreeing on the action plan. This time three topics have been chosen: Climate Change, Biodiversity and Renewable Sources of Energy. |
The final roundtable with built in feedback section gave time to the participants to reflect on how the training has been for them and to share with the organisers and the other participants their impressions. All attendees agreed that the classroom would never be quite the same again! |
| Julia Panchyzhna, the teacher trainer pictured above, says: “Three years ago our team pioneered SAW trainings in the country thanks to the support of BC Ukraine and now we have a network of enthusiastic teachers sharing their newly acquired Internet skills with their colleagues. Our ambitious target is to reach every teacher out of 543,000 school teachers in Ukraine! Good luck to all our volunteer coordinators.” |
The teachers hope that their new school blogs would help them to set up links with a school in Europe or invite another partner school to join an existing school activitiy. |
