Web-based Science Education Programme Wins Global Best Award For Business-Education Partnership

Science Across the World, a unique, internet-led, science education programme has won a Global Best Award for helping thousands of children learn how science affects people in different communities around the world.

The Global Best Award has recognised this innovative education-business partnership programme between the Association for Science Education and GlaxoSmithKline for the difference it is making to students’ sense of social responsibility.

Christopher Lea, judging on behalf of the International Partnership Network said, ‘Young learners are inspired to make their science studies relate to the day-to-day challenges of the world around them and this is regarded by the judges as a highly significant investment in the quality of learning for today’s global economy.’

The presentation of the Award on 18 November coincides with the announcement this week, by the Secretary of State for Education and Skills, Charles Clarke, of the government’s International Strategy for Education, Skills and Children’s Services.  The strategy aims to equip children for life in a global society, promote global citizenship and twin all schools in England with schools in other countries via an internet Global Gateway.

Science Across the World encourages children, aged 8 to 16 years to explore scientific and environmental issues in their own school, local community and country.  Currently 90,000 children from schools in 99 countries, from the UK to Uganda, use the Science Across the World website to research issues and share what they have learned with children in other countries.   Topics include diet and health, energy and the environment, genetics and biodiversity.

Marianne Cutler, Director of Curriculum Development at The Association for Science Education said ‘We are delighted that Science Across the World has been recognised by this award.  We share the same goals with our partner GlaxoSmithKline: to enhance science teaching and help young people to be articulate and make informed decisions about science issues.  By working together we have developed a unique programme with a global
community of over 3,000 teachers enabling pupils to share perspectives on science.’

Kay Roberts, Manager, Education Programmes, GlaxoSmithKline said ‘GSK supports the development of science education around the world.  The number of children learning about science issues through Science Across the World has increased by 35,000 since our partnership began in 2001.  This demonstrates the impact that business and education can have when they work together.’
