Results of DNA 50th Anniversary Competition, Bulgaria
On March 18th 2004, an unusual event took place in the National Museum of Natural History in Sofia, Bulgaria. Prizes were given to pupils who participated in an international competition dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the discovery of DNA. It was organised by the Ecology Club of the Spanish Language School, Sofia, Science Across the World, FACT and the Bulgarian section of AEDE. At the event there were representatives from British Council, Sofia.
Pupils from several countries were challenged to make a model or a picture of the DNA molecule using natural products or wastes. All the students were given certificates of attendance, and of course the best projects received the first, second and third award. The jury found it really difficult to select only one project to be given the first prize for each category.
A drawing by Ivo Iliev (Plovdiv) won the first place for a picture of DNA. The title of the picture is ‘Secrets and Riddles - revealing of a mystery’.
The impressive idea by Nedialka Cholakova (Plovdiv), who designed this piece of maize on the right also won the first prize in the category of natural products.
The second place was occupied by two projects. Elitsa and Yanina (Sofia) designed a sample of the DNA structure using... bread! The concept is really great as you can see from the picture below.
The other project that received a second-place award was created by Alexander Yolov (Sofia).
The organizers were really happy because they received many drawings and hand-made objects that represented the structure of the DNA. Many students from Plovdiv and their teacher Tancho Agushev received the prize for the greatest number of entries - 44 altogether.
The jury were: a teacher of Art (Dorotea Milanova), a teacher of History (Andrey Lunin), a student (Georgi Ivanov), a teacher of Biology and Chemistry (Stefka Kitanova).
