GlaxoSmithKline hosts INSET course Science Across the World

On March 26th, 2004 GlaxoSmithKline, the Netherlands in Zeist, hosted a meeting for Science across the World. The meeting was organised and managed by APS, the Dutch organisation for School Improvement (Ingrid Vermeulen, Lida Schoen and Martin van Os).
Programme
-
What is Science Across the World?, (new) possibilities for teachers of biology, chemistry, science for public understanding, geography and modern foreign languages (Lida Schoen)
-
Why does GlaxoSmithKline support the Science Across the World programme?; corporate communication policy (Saskia Doornweerd)
-
Academic lecture: Gen technology and health care in the future, Prof. Dr. Jan Raaijmakers, director Respiratory of GlaxoSmithKline
-
Group work, possibilities in the class room with plenary reports
This programme was very well received by over 40 enthusiastic and interested teachers, two teacher trainers and quite a few language teachers. At the end of the day they asked for an annual event.
Most of the participants were 'new' tot Science across the World, but as the Science across the World website improved dramatically recently, the morning programme offered something new to all participants.
Saskia Doornweerd, director Corporate Communications explained why GSK supports Science across the World and why she invited all of us.
After a nice lunch Prof. Raaijmakers presented his 'academic' lecture on gen technology and health care in the future: a clear outline of a relevant subject. The day was rounded off with group work on implementation with plenary reports afterwards. A special interest for collaboration between the Science and English departments was noticed.
After drinks and something to eat participants left with a bag full of information, a complete topic of their choice, a cd-rom 'The science behind medicines, a teaching resource for 15-19 year olds' and gadgets, like a calculator.
